Bova Score for Pulmonary Embolism Complications

Estimates 30-day risk of PE-related complications in hemodynamically stable patients with confirmed pulmonary embolism.

Eligibility: Do not use this score in patients with systolic blood pressure below 90 mmHg or in hemodynamically unstable patients.

90–100 mmHg scores 2 points; greater than 100 mmHg scores 0 points.

Elevated cardiac troponin

Use the standard assay and your laboratory cutoff value.

Right ventricular dysfunction

TTE: RV/LV ratio >0.9, sPAP >30 mmHg, RV end-diastolic diameter >30 mm, RV dilation, or free-wall hypokinesis. CT: RV/LV ratio >1 (short-axis diameter).

Heart rate ≥110 beats/min scores 1 point.
