Brief Addiction Monitor (BAM)

A 30-day, categorical-response assessment of substance use, relapse risk factors, and recovery-supportive behaviors.

Clinical use: BAM supports measurement-based care and progress monitoring. It is not a stand-alone diagnostic or emergency assessment.

Health and wellbeing

These items contribute to the Risk score.

Alcohol and drug use

Items 4, 5, and 6 contribute to the Use score. Item 5 is shown only when alcohol use is reported.

Recovery supports and environment

Items 8, 11, and 15 contribute to Risk; items 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, and 16 contribute to Protection.

For example, around risky “people, places, or things.”

Recovery progress

Item 17 is displayed separately and is not included in a BAM composite score.

BAM results

Report the three domain scores separately; BAM does not produce a validated overall total.

Risk score

Higher score = more relapse/worsening-risk factors.

Protective score

0 / 24

Higher score = more recovery-supportive factors.

Use score

0 / 12

Higher score = greater reported alcohol/drug use.

Item 17 (recovery-goal satisfaction): . This item is not included in the Risk, Protective, or Use composite scores.

Scoring shown here is for the categorical 30-day BAM: Risk = 1 + 2 + 3 + 8 + 11 + 15; Protective = 9 + 10 + 12 + 13 + 14 + 16; Use = 4 + 5 + 6. Item 7 and item 17 are not part of the composite calculations.
