Basal Energy Expenditure Calculator

Adult nutrition estimate

Basal Energy Expenditure Calculator

Estimate basal energy expenditure (BEE) and total daily energy expenditure using the revised Harris–Benedict equation and an activity factor.

Sex

For adults aged 18 years and over.

The activity factor is applied to the BEE estimate to calculate estimated daily energy expenditure.

View equation and interpretation

Male: BEE = 66.47 + (13.75 × weight in kg) + (5.003 × height in cm) − (6.755 × age in years)

Female: BEE = 655.1 + (9.563 × weight in kg) + (1.850 × height in cm) − (4.676 × age in years)

BEE estimates the energy needed to maintain basic bodily functions at rest. Estimated daily energy expenditure is calculated as BEE × selected activity factor.

Clinical note: This tool provides an estimate for adults and is not a substitute for individual nutrition assessment. Use clinical judgement or specialist assessment where energy needs may be altered, including acute illness, pregnancy, or major changes in body composition.
