The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) is a clinician-rated instrument used to measure the severity of schizophrenia symptoms. Developed by Kay, Opler, and Fiszbein (1987), it remains a research and clinical standard for tracking symptom burden and treatment response. A trained rater completes a semi-structured interview (typically ~45–50 minutes) and may incorporate collateral information.
