Kt/V is a way of measuring how “adequate” a hemodialysis treatment is – in other words, how effectively a dialysis session is clearing waste from the blood.
What is Kt/V?
Kt/V is a dimensionless number made from three parts:
- K = dialyzer clearance (how much blood the dialyzer can clean per minute)
- t = time on dialysis (minutes or hours)
- V = volume of distribution of urea (roughly similar to the patient’s total body water)

Single-pool Kt/V (Daugirdas II equation) for hemodialysis.
Use the same unit (mg/dL or mmol/L) for pre- and post-dialysis BUN.
