The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a clinical tool used to assess a person’s level of consciousness after a brain injury or in any condition that affects consciousness. It evaluates three key functions:
- Eye Opening (E) – scored 1 to 4
- Verbal Response (V) – scored 1 to 5
- Motor Response (M) – scored 1 to 6
The scores from each category are added to give a total score ranging from 3 to 15:
- 13–15: Mild brain injury or normal consciousness
- 9–12: Moderate brain injury
- 3–8: Severe brain injury or coma
The GCS is widely used in emergency and critical care settings to monitor changes in a patient’s neurological status and guide clinical decision-making.
