The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a clinical tool used to assess a person’s level of consciousness after a brain injury or in any condition that affects consciousness. It evaluates three key functions:

  1. Eye Opening (E) – scored 1 to 4
  2. Verbal Response (V) – scored 1 to 5
  3. Motor Response (M) – scored 1 to 6

The scores from each category are added to give a total score ranging from 3 to 15:

  • 13–15: Mild brain injury or normal consciousness
  • 9–12: Moderate brain injury
  • 3–8: Severe brain injury or coma

The GCS is widely used in emergency and critical care settings to monitor changes in a patient’s neurological status and guide clinical decision-making.
