Kt/V Ratio for Dialysis

Kt/V is a way of measuring how “adequate” a hemodialysis treatment is – in other words, how effectively a dialysis session is clearing waste from the blood.

What is Kt/V?

Kt/V is a dimensionless number made from three parts:

  • K = dialyzer clearance (how much blood the dialyzer can clean per minute)
  • t = time on dialysis (minutes or hours)
  • V = volume of distribution of urea (roughly similar to the patient’s total body water)

Use the same unit (mg/dL or mmol/L) for pre- and post-dialysis BUN.
